ILPS Condemns Canada’s Pandering to USA on Venezuela

ILPS

The ILPS CANADA condemns in the strongest terms possible the Trudeau governments ongoing pandering to US imperialism in Venezuela. The Canadian Government has clearly illustrated over the past several months, in over a dozen statements, actions at the Organization of American States (OAS) and leadership in the “Lima Group”, that it is intent on supporting US efforts to undermine the democratically-elected government in Venezuela.

The 12 countries of the “Lima Group” were assembled by the U.S. to do its bidding after it failed to get enough votes inside the OAS to isolate Venezuela.

The US has pursued a policy of destabilization in Venezuela after their  2002 coup attempt failed because of a popular uprising. This policy reached its apex earlier this year when the opposition and extremist elements, many under the pay of Venezuela’s oligarchs, led often-violent street protests the resulted in the death of over 100 people.

The US used this opportunity to again intervene in Venezuela’s domestic affairs by pursuing a policy of regime change of the country’s democratically elected government. In response to the Venezuelan people’s constitutional initiative to restore peace, called the Constitutional Assembly, the US President indicated on August 11 that, “We have many options for Venezuela and by the way….A military operation and military option is certainly something that we could pursue”.

The intensifying propaganda against the Maduro government and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela is part of the effort to install a pro-US regime and open again the Venezuelan economy to unbridled international exploitation and plunder.

Through this process Canada has taken a hostile position towards Venezuela by calling into question the validity of the recent regional elections, directly intervening in Venezuela’s internal affairs by calling for unity among the opposition parties and the dismantling of the democratically-elected constituent assembly.

In lockstep with the US, Canada has imposed coercive sanctions against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and other officials of the Bolivarian Republic. Through the Lima group, Canada is pushing for new elections and electoral calendar and calling for non-recognition of acts emanating from the duly elected Constituent Assembly.

The International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS) expresses its solidarity and support with the peoples of Venezuela. The ILPS condemns the ongoing and rapacious attempts to promote regime change in order to seize control Venezuelan oil reserves for US corporate interests.

Oppose US Imperialism!

Oppose Canada’s shameful puppet policies on Venezuela!

Defend the Sovereignty of Venezuela!

Hands off Venezuela!
