REQUIREMENTS TO GET MARRIED IN VENEZUELA

Any person wishing to get married should present the following documents to the authorities in Venezuela:

1. Birth Certificate.

2. Certificate of Marital Status.
 If Single – an affidavit duly signed by a notary, stating that there is no legal impediment to get married and witnessed by three people of legal age
 If Divorced – Divorce Decree
 If Widowed – the death certificate of the spouse, along with the affidavit duly signed by a notary, stating that there is no legal impediment to get married and witnessed by three people of legal age

The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Canada*, Legal Advisory Division, should authenticate all above-mentioned documents, prior to its legalization by the Embassy of Venezuela and they are free of charge.

3. The country that is not included in the list of the Tourist Card-Dex-2 (Countries whose citizens may travel to Venezuela without visas) their citizen should apply for a tourist visa.

Notes:

  • The legalization of these documents is free of charge, based on the Organic Law of the Consular Service, Art. 55 - 2, for which, the interested part has to present a written request to legalize the documents, they should be used in order to get married in Venezuela.
  • By law, in Venezuela, a civil marriage is required prior to the religious ceremony.

Please be advised that in order to get married in Venezuela, one must comply with a series of compulsory requirements, while in the country, which cannot be fulfilled in a short period of time.
