Social Policies in Venezuela Reduced Levels of Poverty in 2009
The policies of investment and social inclusion implemented by the government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela during 2009 allowed a better distribution of incomes, as well as a decrease of inequality figures in Venezuela, said the President of the Venezuela’s National Statistics Institute (INE), Elías Eljuri. He also informed that the 2009 Gini Index –which measures income inequality--reached 0.3928 percent.
Eljuri remarked that in Venezuela the effects of the global financial crisis were minimized due to the government’s efforts, programs and initiatives.
“These efforts are still aimed at diminishing figures of inflation, unemployment and poverty in the country. It has been compensated by social programs that have allowed social inclusion. Through all its programs the government has been improving the quality of life of the population,” expressed Eljuri.
The president of the INE also explained that general poverty was reduced from 27.5 percent to 24.2 percent in one year, while extreme poverty dropped from 7.6 percent to 6 percent. This is one of the lowest figures of Latin America. “It is less than the third part of how it was before (President) Chávez took office,” Eliji added.
The president of the INE commented that during the same period inflation figures also dropped, as well as unemployment, which wa reduced to7.5 percent.
Regarding this matter, Eljuri pointed out that in comparison to other countries Venezuela has the lowest unemployment rate, considering the global crisis that took place in 2009. Only in the United States unemployment rates rose to10 percent, while in Spain and Chile they approached 20 and 10 percent respectively.
The Venezuelan official said that the government adopted and will continue adopting measures against speculation, which have contributed to reducing the inflationary process in the country.
